{Design Statement}  Revive, a rehabilitation center, located in Paris, Texas has been designed for veterans, specifically those that combat PTSD and depression. Nearly 30 percent of veterans suffer with these conditions and only about one-third of them receive treatment. A combination of custom features and natural elements throughout, help make this place unique and different from other rehabilitation centers. Intense research on the issue, consideration and regulation of building codes, case studies of healthcare typologies, professional mentor advice, and personal flare has also aided along with the process and final creation of this project.

This facility is meant to help encourage and engage the veterans in different activities that help sharpen their minds, bodies, and souls. Different zones are distinguished amongst the layout that captivate each one of these activities as follows: spiritual, physical, mental, private, social, personal, and general health. The design scope includes allocation of the Reception, Waiting Area, Offices, Exam/Consult Rooms, Nurse Station, Spa: Salon, Changing Rooms, and Massage Rooms, Storage Spaces, Restrooms, Showers, Gym, Studio, Physical and Group Therapy Rooms, Café, Lounge and Dining Areas, Laundry, Janitor Closet, Breakroom, Kitchen, and Outdoor Courtyard. The location of the building is important for this project for two main reasons. The first reason is due to the lack of similar places for veterans to do such activities for necessary rehabilitation. One of the prime examples of a similar type of facility is the Veterans Health Administration’s, VA Hospital. The four biggest cities in Texas are Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas. The nearest one would be found in Dallas, which is nearly two hours away from Paris. Thus, Revive was strategically placed here. The other reason for the chosen location of the building is because of what is in walking proximity of it. The original purpose of this building is a civic center. The Love Civic Center happens to be a one to two minute walk from the Red River Valley Veteran’s Memorial. This memorial is a commemoration for the men and women that served and sacrificed their lives, in the military, that were specifically from Texas.

A combination of custom features, expressive ideations, and natural elements throughout, help make the facility unique from other rehabilitation centers. Custom features include built-in seating, sideboards, and desks. A distinct ideation, perhaps the most meaningful one, is the “Missing Man Table.” This is to recognize the men and women who served in the military who have been missing from combat. Their remains have not been tracked or found after the war, but have been confirmed that they did not come home. It is a significant, sentimental piece that will be found in the building, within the Open Lounge and Dining space. Natural elements include the use of sustainable wood, daylighting, biophilia walls, and water structure. Nature has been carried through the entire concept with the color scheme of primarily yellows, greens, blues, and browns. All veterans deserve a place where they can remain healthy spiritually, physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially, as they age and-or deal with depression and PTSD. Engaging and being encouraged in different activities that promote these factors, ultimately benefits their well-being. The ultimate goal of this rehabilitation center is to support American veterans, the people who did the most for our country.
